bicycles in knoxville

Walking around downtown on Friday checking out the galleries, I noticed that almost every sign and lamppost had a bicycle locked to it. I took this picture in the Old City near Java. I see bikers (or bicyclists?) in increasing numbers around town, many of them commuting in to work. I myself am trying to bike into work more often than I drive- one of my New Year's resolutions.
Many of the writers on this blog have consciously chosen to live near downtown Knoxville for one main reason: you can get around without a car for almost anything you need. It's possible these days to park your car and not move it for a week or two. Think of all the gas and maintenance costs you can save! And you'll have a built-in exercise regimen in your daily routine.
I'll keep you updated on my biking adventures. Many motorists here still resent bicyclists taking up room on the roads and try their best to run us off. But biking is worth it for so many reasons- something that I think is reflected in the growing number of bikes in Knoxville.

My ride.

dayum, that is a nice ride. my buddy Noah (who was once a graffiti guy himself, using the tag Wise, and who got arrested and wrote up in Metropulse) was an avid bike dude (cyclist sounds so 80's) and rode from way down South Knox all the way to UT campus. that was a challenge.

the South, in general, is not bike-friendly. then again, having been to Europe, one could say the same for the rest of our country... except big cities I guess (yeah, tell a NYC bike messenger that)

Sweet ride. I too am trying to make my commute by bike (and KAT bus) these days. I'll take 1978, or the Mantra if I find it unlocked. (kidding, I like my bike just fine)
