First Friday, spring fever style

I just checked the weather for today, and it's supposed to be 65 degrees and partly sunny at 6 p.m., which means there is very little excuse for you not to do First Friday today.

There are a couple of offerings tonight that are a bit different from the art exhibits that have become the staple of First Friday. There's a new FF venue in the Walnut Building (located next to the library and across the street from the Hilton) that will feature the furniture designs of Resurrection Design by Raven Toney. Toney uses only salvaged wood for his beautiful and unique creations. There will also be photography, fused glass and jewelry showings from a few of his friends.

Over at Vagabondia at Market Square, milner Patricia Frankum will be hosting a hat trunk show just in time for all the stylish ladies to find something good for Easter or the Kentucky Derby. I've missed the Rossini Festival for the past few years, but Frankum is apparently a regular there and, from the photos I've seen, her hats are fabulous. You just might find the Modern Gal strolling around the square tonight with an outrageous new chapeau.

If for some reason 65-degree weather, beautiful salvaged wood furniture and the MG in a crazy hat don't do it for you, the Tennessee Theatre is showing Casablanca tonight at 8 p.m. and again on Sunday at 2. I can't say enough about going to see a classic flick at the Theatre. There's something magical about it.

And one non-Friday Weird Knoxville shout out: The Sunspot is hosting its annual Rico Stache Bash on Saturday night. There are some fantastic categories, such as 'best place to hide a criminal,' 'best female' and 'welcome to puberty.' There's no cover, but donations are being accepted to support the UT Small Animal Oncology Department in honor of a dog named Rico. Voting runs from 9:30 to 10 and the winners are announced at 10:30.
