A Theft??

I noticed this gaping wound the other day...

So I wondered if someone decided it would make a nice table. Especially since it looks like it was simply ripped out of its mount with a crow bar and a tow truck.

But then I found this...

It was simply moved half a block away. Its new placement, though rather grave-marker-ish, is fine. Which leads me to wonder, is the old supreme court building close to being sold? One can only hope so.

Also does anyone know who maintains that property, which city department?

UPDATE/ Addendum

This plaque marked out the building, it's construction date, etc and I had been eyeing it for a possible counter top. That's why I was disturbed when I saw it was missing.

Pol,

Are you talking about the building across Henley Street from the Convention Center?

If so, a local developer is planning to buy it, and build a $78 million hotel/condo/office project on the site.

Sans hotel, right, Josh?

Interesting. Doesn't the state still own it? I know someone who works for a state judge whose office is in that building. I wonder where those offices will move.

Also, I have no idea what that marker is, Pol. Can you elaborate a bit?

As far as I know, the hotel is still part of the plan.

Does this project have any traction? Is a plan of this scope even practical given the economic conditions? The Northshore debacle seems to be a bad harbinger of the current development climate in KTown in general...

1. I hate to say it but the building seems doomed. I love the marble clad court room and entrance and think it would make a fantastic restaurant even if everything else had to go. But save that small part. It's well on it's style is well on it's way to being extinct in this country and it's high time we stopped just saving older buildings. Modern is valid too.

2. I believe all the courts have moved already to the Old Post Office building. They just signed a new longer term lease and they love it there so i don't see that changing.

3. The project to take the whole sight seems to be a go and yes it does have traction.
