Fun with Stencils!

Hey, are you interested in an exciting career in art? Want to make your 'mark' on the world? Well create a stencil and any urban landscape can become your canvas!

Seriously, I like these little fellows, but a note to the artist: less is more! One 'installation' per block is probably a bit much.

the person that is doing this is terrible. they are causing small businesses on broadway and the surrounding areas to spend money they don't have over and over to paint over these hideous stencils. I've even seen them on the recently repainted corridor of Central.

Please do not condone a person who is causing hardships during a recession which is very difficult for the local, small businesses this graffiti "artist" is targeting. this person is making the downtown areas which still need help even uglier and less desireable than they already are.

These are out as far as sutherland. I kind of like them too, but alas, they are not on my property.

2 graffiti artists have recently been arrested- the one doing the walruses (i think), and i don't know what the other person's tag is. Let's hope this idiot is next!

I was going to say that I kind of like the walruses, but now I'm scared that Anonymous will come to Wyoming and hurt me.

Graffiti art is an acceptable form of artistic expression depending on location and frequency. To those complaining please look at Banksy's artwork: http://www.banksy.co.uk/

Also to those complaining please look at the areas the artist has choosen, urban areas of decay. This is not distracting in any way and in fact adds a bit of 'fun' to the streets of Knoxville.

Unless you're the business in question. Your comments about the artist hurting small business's is not valid.

You call the side of an open business on Broadway an area of Urban Decay?

I love good graffiti, but I love SMART, good graffiti. This is neither. One (or even a few) of these might have worked if well-placed, but as it is the smothering of them around town only makes the artist look dumb.

...and Banksy, it ain't.

The first time I saw these faces, I thought they were cool. Now, I think they are annoying. Even if it is on plywood or decaying buildings, there are too many and will be there for a long, long, LONG time. It aggravates me just to think about it.

...just sayin'

Too much, too much. Overexposed.

not a fan.

cmp, you're right, banksy it ain't. he's clever and thoughtful, not plain overexposed. but i don't think he's/she's trying to be banksy.

as for the comments about hurting small business, i can see both sides. i'm not going to skip getting a burger at gus's because there's a face on his building. however, if i were one of the business owners, and it's well within reason to see this from their point of view, i would be a little peeved about having any kind of graffiti on my building. that said, i may not have their sales figures from the past year to confirm it, but the comment is valid no matter who you are... it adds up. and the face is multiplying like rabbits.

i live very close to one of the faces and have to drive by several of them every day on my way to and from work. it is annoying.

Sonic Grass, how would you feel if the tags were left on the side of your own home?

It may not hurt the businesses financially, but I'm sure anyone who's put their money and sweat equity in a business doesn't want to see other people take it on themselves to 'decorate' their businesses without consulting them first.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate some graffiti when it's quality, but there's a time and a place for it. And there's potential for overkill when it comes to tagging, and the faces are overkill.

Exactly, MG.

I never noticed the walruses on anything except plywood and condemned structures.

the walruses have been put all over old city, especially on the jackson atiliers building. the side door has had to be repainted at least 3 times. the jackson atiliers certainly isn't a condemned structure.
